User Rights Management is not a One-way Street!

In late October 2010, the STX Finland Oy shipyard’s staff looked on with pride and a little sadness as their latest gem, the “Allure of the Seas”, disembarked on its maiden voyage to its new home in the Caribbean. The world’s largest cruiser had been designed and built years ago in the Finnish city of Turku.

Large-scale projects such as this also represent a major challenge as regards IT security, because it is not only the 3,500 employees of the largest Finnish shipyard who use the IT systems; in addition, thousands of external employees from several hundreds of partner companies also need to access a broad range of STX’s applications while working on the project.

Since early 2010, the SAM Identity Management solution from Beta Systems Software AG has been ensuring that all involved have the required access rights at the right time, as well as revoking the rights as soon as they are no longer needed

Kimmo Metso, STX

"SAM allows us to control the access rights of individuals from partners and sub-partners with great precision. This is imperative as we have a multi-level corporate partner network divided into three categories“

Kimmo Metso, Corporate Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)

"With SAM we can now define for each project when access to any given system will be revoked for user x.“

Sami Nikkanen, Project Manager in charge of implementing the Identity Management system

"Beta Systems had an Identity Management solution up and running within just a single day that was able to process all information from Windows Active Directory. That impressed us the most."

Facts

About the Company
The long-established Finnish shipyard STX Finland Oy became a member of the international STX Europe Group in 2008 and is now part of one of the globally leading builders of cruisers and offshore vessels. STX Europe AS has a total staff of approximately 16,000 employees and operates 15 yards in Finland, France, Norway, Rumania, Brazil and Vietnam. 3,500 work at STX Finland Oy, whose three large shipyards are located in Turku, Helsinki and Rauma.

The Challenge
The shipbuilding projects carried out by STX Finland Oy are highly complex, and they normally involve cooperation with various external partner companies. These require – just like the shipyard employees – access to key IT applications for the duration of the project. STX Finland found it increasingly difficult to allocate and revoke these rights in a controlled manner.

Benefits
The SAM Identity Management solution provides STX Finland Oy with an infrastructure platform for the centralized and transparent management of the access rights of all people involved in a project, and it further allows the company to implement a role-based security scheme. This makes it possible to audit all accesses and generate system usage reports.

Competitive Advantage
A globally leading company such as STX Finland Oy requires forward-looking and flexible IT solutions to stay at the top. SAM provides the shipbuilder with an Identity Management system that perfectly matches their IT strategy. IT security gaps can quickly result in loss of business – in order to prevent this from happening, STX Finland decided to introduce SAM Identity Management.
