Senior Consultant
Markus joined Beta Systems in 2021 and now works full-time on the mainframe – an area that has fascinated him for many years. In Professional Services, he supports customers in migrating third-party systems to solutions from Beta Systems. Thanks to modern methods, these migrations can be carried out efficiently and flexibly adapted to the individual requirements of customers – with a proven track record of success.
When did you start working at Beta Systems? Why did you choose Beta Systems back then?
I’ve been working at Beta Systems since July 2021. In my previous job, I had my first contact with mainframes and wanted to build on that. When projects at my old company came to an end and the team was being restructured, I took the opportunity to switch. Now I work full-time on and with the mainframe.
What are your tasks at Beta Systems?
In project work, I mainly handle migrations: So when a customer switches from a competitor’s product to a Beta product, or from one Beta product to another, it’s my job to create the programs that make this transition possible.
What does a typical working day look like for you?
Always different. Since we work for more than one customer at a time, there are always “waves” – some days are full of coordination meetings, others are more focused on technical tasks. And just when you think you have a day planned, another customer shows up with an urgent issue.
Office or home office?
Hmm. I work with a colleague from Cologne, several from Neustadt, and customers all over Germany. So whether I sit in Moabit (Berlin) or at home really doesn’t make a difference. Honestly, I’ve gotten used to working from home full-time. At my previous job, we had to switch to remote work from one day to the next when COVID hit – and it worked. You just need to replace the coffee break to stay in touch with your colleagues.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Honestly, everything! I’ve been wanting to work more with mainframes for a long time, my colleagues are very nice, and the customer projects are both challenging and varied.
What do you particularly appreciate about your colleagues?
In my team, there are company veterans and very new, young team members – you learn from one group and pass on knowledge to the other. And when nobody has done something before, we figure it out together.
What qualities do you need for a job in your field? What challenges are there?
Besides the usual things like flexibility, dealing with customers – who can sometimes be challenging – there’s also the mainframe itself. It’s definitely a bit unique and not exactly the newest tech. That means you often encounter people – also on the customer side – who’ve been doing their job for decades and are really good at it. That can make it tough to keep up when you’ve only had a few years to get into it.
What do you like best about Beta Systems as an employer?
I have a lot of freedom here. Of course, our projects are customer-driven, so you work within certain boundaries. But in my last job, everything was very tightly regulated – I feel much more comfortable at Beta.
What three words would you use to describe Beta Systems?
Authentic, inspiring, and teamwork.
