When did you start working at Beta Systems? Why did you choose Beta Systems back then?

In May 1996, I started my job at Beta Systems Software AG as a software trainer. My attention was drawn to Beta Systems by a job advertisement. I was in the final weeks of a job application training course after having completed further vocational training. As part of this, I sent my documents to Beta Systems and also gave a lesson to twelve people as a trainer.

What are your tasks at Beta Systems?

Since the merger of Office IT with the data center, I have been responsible for the hardware in the data center and have also taken over the supervision of the server room. My tasks include backing up the file servers and important data from applications and virtual systems. I also look after the virtual systems in the development area and across the entire company, including their applications. I also manage the network technology within Beta Systems and the company's Internet connection. I also support the mainframe team with network issues.

What does a typical working day look like for you?

A typical working day for me starts with checking my emails and monitoring tools. I check the backups, solve any problems that have arisen and check the hardware in the data center and server room. I also devote myself to project work.

Office or home office?

I prefer working in the office, as the social and direct contact with colleagues is very important to me. In addition, going home gives me the perfect opportunity to switch off and leave the working day behind me.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy most about my job is that it never gets boring or monotonous. There is always something unforeseen, be it strategic or technical changes, which provide variety and challenges.

What do you particularly appreciate about your colleagues?

I particularly appreciate working together and the team spirit among my colleagues.

What qualities do you need for a job in your field? What challenges are there?

For a job in my field, you need to have a keen interest in IT as well as a certain amount of composure, as it can be quite stressful, especially when there are technical failures. Another challenge is balancing the requirements and needs of development with legal, financial and material resources. In addition, the constantly changing IT landscape, whether in the Azure/AWS environment, with applications or currently with AI, is a real challenge that doesn't get any easier with age.

What do you like best about Beta Systems as an employer?

What I particularly like about Beta Systems as an employer is the familial environment where using first names is the standard. I also value the flexible working conditions, which include flextime and the freedom to choose my workplace. Collaborating with other departments is also a major plus.

What 3 words would you use to describe Beta Systems?

A great company with interesting products and great employees.

Keeping Dependencies Up to Date: How Beta Systems Secures the Software Supply Chain

Open-source dependencies accelerate software development but come with risks. Outdated libraries, missing patches, and even supply chain attacks can slip in unnoticed. In the first three months of 2025 alone, the MITRE Foundation registered over twelve thousand new CVEs – around 130 new entries every day. Each could, in principle, affect third-party code within a product. High-profile cases such as Log4Shell (CVE-2021-44228) and the recent compromise of npm packages by the Shai-Hulud worm in September and November 2025 illustrate the point: without a clear strategy for dependency management, a single weakness can threaten millions of systems at once. In this article, we explain how Beta Systems secures the software supply chain through effective dependency management and automation.
