Operlog Tools – Simplified z/OS Log Stream Handling

Operlog Tools from Beta Systems simplify the search, analysis and archiving of high volumes of z/OS log stream data such as OPERLOG. Powerful search and filtering capabilities provide administrators and developers with fast access to relevant log data, helping them narrow down root causes and minimize the risk of system downtime.

  • Find and analyze data faster: Comprehensive search and filtering options help users quickly identify relevant information across vast volumes of Operlog data.

  • Narrow down root causes: Operlog Tools can display messages immediately before and after a critical event, providing valuable context for faster error analysis.

  • Secure automation and archiving: Operlog data can be processed via JCL, protected through access controls such as RACF, TOP-Secret and ACF2, and securely archived for long-term use.

Operlog Tools help IT teams efficiently process and analyze z/OS log streams. Millions of log entries can be searched, processed and reliably archived, while administrators and developers gain transparent access to relevant log information. The tools also support the analysis of IBM cluster log data and millions of Sysplex operation data sets in OPERLOG.

Operlog Manager provides a unified interface for centralized access to Operlog data. Comprehensive selection and filter criteria can be configured for individual use or shared across teams, providing everyone involved with a unified view of an analysis case and simplifying the investigation of large volumes of log data.

For root cause analysis, users can focus on suspicious or critical messages, message components or jobs. Configurable time frames make it possible to display messages that occurred immediately before and after an event, providing additional context for troubleshooting. Batch control via JCL, controlled access rights and secure long-term archiving complement these analysis capabilities

Does Mainframe Security Have an IWS Blind Spot?

The IBM Z Workload Scheduler (IZWS) orchestrates business-critical processing at massive scale, yet it rarely appears in mainframe security conversations focused on access control and perimeter defense. Someone with legitimate scheduler access, such as a compromised account, a malicious insider, or a mistaken administrator, can alter or delete scheduling definitions without tripping any alarm, and standard logs record that a change happened without preserving a way to reverse it. In this article, we examine this challenge and present a solution using Beta Systems' IWS/Audit.
